Meet Rubik Ghosh who has recently joined Datamine Australia as a Senior Mining Consultant, joining the Brisbane team to assist clients in the coal industry. Rubik has over 10 years of experience in mining engineering.
Get to know Rubik a little better through the interview below:
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a Mining Engineer with over 12 years’ experience in the industry and graduated in 2009 from the University of Queensland.
My first mining role was driving haul trucks at Blair Athol Coal Mine in the summer of 2007. It was here where I was first exposed to what a coal mine site looked like. I was fortunate in receiving a Rio Tinto Scholarship during university, which allowed me to experience Drill and Blast Design as a vacation student at Yandicoogina the following summer before joining Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Graduate Program at West Angelas in the Pilbara in 2010.
I ended up working for Rio Tinto for just short of 9 years across several mine sites in the Pilbara undertaking various engineering roles such as Drill and Blast Engineering, Production Engineering, Grade Control, and Mine & Development Scheduling. I was very fortunate to work under some great people through my early years with Rio, many of whom I remain in contact with today.
In 2018, I took a career break to pursue an MBA at a faster pace and joined MEC Mining (a global mining consultancy) in 2019. It was here that I further developed my problem solving & financial modelling skills and gained experience in other commodities besides Iron Ore. In 2021, I worked at EY as part of the Supply Chain and Operations team in Brisbane.
I have now joined Datamine in Brisbane seeking a fresh challenge and to grow further.
Can you explain some of the challenges you consult to your clients on in a few sentences and how you help them improve?
I think typically there are two main components to these challenges – the first is understanding what the clients’ problems or pain points are. Second what the best solutions are in addressing those problems or pain points.
Clients can sometimes have trouble articulating what their problems are and often need clarification of the problem(s) to understand what the root cause of their problem(s) is/are. A simple 5 Whys or Root Cause Analysis can help uncover the underlying problem(s).
Similarly, when it comes to solutions, I think it’s important to consider second and third order impacts of the solutions before they are implemented.
What inspired your career in this industry?
The nature of engagements around the world and great financial incentives inspired me to pursue a career in Mining.
What is the most satisfying aspect of your role / the work you do?
I really enjoy problem solving. Being able to work with intelligent people to solve problems together.
What are your best memories from your career?
The friendships, travel and trading war stories.
What’s a fun fact about you?
I am a yogi and consume one tablespoon of honey every evening after dinner.
