Meet Joe Huang who has recently joined the Datamine family in Brisbane in the role of Software Engineer for CCLAS. Joe has 15 years of experience in the development of real-time machine management systems for the mining industry. He will be working as a full-stack developer for CCLAS.
Get to know Joe a little better through the interview below:
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I was born in Fuzhou, a small city in the southeast of China where I completed my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at the Fuzhou University. Then I came to Queensland University of Technology (QUT) for a master’s degree in Information Technology. After graduation, I joined Synyati for 2 years to develop and maintain payment systems in the banking industry. For over the past 15 years, I worked at Caterpillar developing and maintaining a machine management system for the mining industry.
Can you explain some of the challenges you consult to your clients on and how you help them improve?
In my role, by its nature, I touch on the full spectrum of application development from the back end all the way to the UI. I deal with multiple technologies, tight development times and sometime incomplete data. Every day brings a new challenge and so it’s great to have the backing of the wider development team at Datamine to work together so we can reverse engineer the problem and find the right solution. I believe that with collaboration, hard work and perseverance, there is always a solution.
What inspired your career in this industry?
With Australia being one of the world’s largest sources of mineral resources, I believe it guarantees great opportunities for my career growth and a better future.
What is the most satisfying aspect of your role / the work you do?
As a full-stack developer, I have the opportunity to touch base on different aspects of CCLAS to learn new tech. I would like to apply my tech and domain knowledge to work with the CCLAS team to make Datamine successful and in return growth and advance my career of a software developer.
What are your best memories from your career?
I really enjoyed participating in one of the Caterpillar’s dealer shows where I stood next to the real mining machines for the very first time and realized how big the mining machine could get.
What’s a fun fact about you?
I am a night owl. I prefer to sleep late and get up late. I enjoy playing badminton and computer games, and I also enjoy travelling around the world as long as I don’t have to rush. My motto for both personal and work life is “Soft fire makes sweet malt” – I prefer to slow down and focus on quality.
