Datamine Peru interviewed Ronald Saldarriaga, Head of Mine Planning at Yura S.A, about their experience with Datamine Solutions and their path to success. Ronald graduated as a geological engineer and collegiate with Master’s degree in Geotechnics, MBA in Management of Investment projects. He has 14 years of experience in mining and explorations of metallic and non-metallic deposits. Here’s what he had to say…

How long have you been using Datamine solutions?

We started with the implementation of the DATAMINE software since July 2016, to the operations of YURA .A.; we needed to be able to carry out the mining processes with software to improve our processes.

First we launched FUSION, GDMS, which was configured with a Central Server to be able to centralize the database of all the projects and mines of YURA S.A. and the Group, managing to standardize the historical database and retrieve information from trenches, old Drillholes, blast holes.

We began to use the DH Logger performing the geological, geotechnical configuration and quality results of the samples obtained from the diamond cores, to be able to log with a Tablet.

Then, the implementation of the Geology module, STRAT 3D, which helped us to be able to update the geological modeling of the quarry, generation of the block model and estimation of resources, with an implicit type of modeling, obtaining excellent results.

In addition, we adopt the planning module STUDIO OP for ramp designs, perforation mesh designs, with the obtained block model improvements were achieved in mining.

The Geotechnical module was also executed with the SIROVISION software. It was complemented with the use of drones that already we had been using in our operations, thus obtaining orthomosaics from the mining fronts. With the software it was possible to carry out structural mapping, the slope stability analysis of all the quarries was implemented (kinematic analysis, limit balance), improving the slope angles of the quarries.

How has the use of different solutions from the same company affected the routine of the mine?

The use of DATAMINE solutions has had an impact on all our exploration and quarry exploitation processes, achieving:

  • Increase the proven and probable reserves of limestone, gypsum, pozzolana, iron quarries.
  • Improvements in the blending of the different mining fronts with low-grade fronts to obtain a more uniform grade according to the limits required in the Plant, thus increasing the useful life of the quarry.
  • Increase the productivity of the equipment, reducing their idling.
  • Decrease in the clearing ratio.
  • Improvements in our costs of operations processes.
  • Enhance the skills of exploration and mine planning personnel in terms of mining software management.

How do you rate the support provided during the integration of the licenses by Datamine?

The support of the DATAMINE consultants has been of vital importance to be able to carry out the implementation from scratch of all the modules (FUSION X database, GDMS; geological modeling and resource estimation with STRAT 3D; mine planning with STUDIO OP; geotechnics with SIROVISION), and I have had the pleasure of being able to participate in the entire implementation process in all its modules,
obtaining improvements and optimal results for the company.

How do users see having a range of solutions available from a single company?

They see it with great optimism, very positive, given that by having all the modules from a single software company, we can integrate everything from the database. In addition, the technical support response from DATAMINE is fast.
