The company has eight operations distributed between Brazil and Peru – three of which are refineries and five mines –, including the largest underground zinc mine in Peru (Cerro Lindo) and the largest zinc refinery in the Americas (Cajamarquilla). As a result, they account for 4% of the world’s zinc production and are the only producer of metallic zinc in Latin America, excluding Mexico. They also produce copper, lead, silver and gold as by-products.
Nexa Resources is a global mining and smelting company, which originated from the establishment of Companhia Mineira de Metais (CMM) in Brazil in 1956. Over time, they have grown, reinvented and established themselves as one of the world’s leading zinc producers.
Nexa faced a critical challenge: implementing a robust and integrated geological database management system that ensured data quality, availability, and security across multiple regions. The goal was to standardize procedures and database structures while giving the team autonomy to configure the system independently of external providers. Additionally, the client needed to address network infrastructure limitations and ensure seamless operations across geographically dispersed locations.
The client operates five polymetallic mines and has extensive exploration projects in all three countries, including six greenfield developments. With their significant production of zinc, copper, and other metals, it was crucial that their geological data management system could support efficient, high-quality data handling across all their operations.
“Fusion is a well-structured, ready-to-use built-in database for both drilling and surface samples. Flexible options to add custom tables and tools. Standardised procedures are shared across various mines and projects worldwide, supported by strong validation tools that ensure high data integrity and traceability.“
Thomas Brenner – Mine and Geology Consultant – Mineral Exploration
The GDMS Fusion solution was deployed with a tailored approach for each region. Fusion Remote was implemented in Brazil and Peru, connecting their remote databases to a central database located in Brazil. This configuration provided a centralized yet flexible solution that could accommodate the unique requirements of each operation while maintaining the integrity of the global database.
A standardized process for data validation was introduced, involving the generation of validation reports. The use of Webservice technology ensured seamless connectivity between the remote databases and the Central Database, allowing for real-time data access and updates. Additionally, a key part of the solution involved training a highly skilled system administrator integral to all implementations. This administrator became responsible for all configurations and QAQC procedures, ensuring database integrity was maintained across all locations.
